These organic native pecan halves come from TLC Ranch, a family-owned ranch and pecan orchard in Oklahoma operated by Tread and Cindy Sheffield.

Since purchasing the land in 1997, the Sheffield family has spent decades caring for the property, developing their orchard, and growing pecans using organic and regenerative farming practices that prioritize soil health and biodiversity.

Native pecans are known for their smaller size and rich, distinctive flavor. Enjoy them straight from the bag, add them to homemade granola, sprinkle them over oatmeal, or use them in holiday baking and family recipes.

Package Size: 1 lb (16 oz) of organic native pecan halves.

AT A GLANCE

We kept hearing it couldn't be done.

We went looking for organic pecans grown without conventional pesticide sprays. Again and again, we heard how difficult that would be. Then we found Tread and Cindy Sheffield at TLC Ranch in Oklahoma.

Getting to know their family and orchard was what drew us in. Tasting their native pecan halves made us appreciate them even more: tender, delicate, and rich with buttery pecan flavor.

BEHIND THE PECAN

A handful of pecans.
Years of work behind them.

It's easy to open a bag and enjoy a handful without thinking about the orchard. Every harvest depends on years of caring for trees, responding to weather and pests, and looking after the soil. At TLC Ranch, the Sheffield family has chosen to do that work using organic growing practices.

01 / THE YEARS

You can't rush a pecan tree.

Pecan trees take years to establish and mature. Native trees were already growing at TLC Ranch when the Sheffield family purchased the property in 1997. The family later began planting additional trees, expanding the orchard over time. Each growing season brings another round of care, long before anyone opens a bag of pecans.

02 / THE CHALLENGE

Pests don't disappear because you grow organically.

Insects, disease, dry spells, and changing weather still affect a pecan orchard. Choosing organic production changes how growers can respond, not whether they have to respond. TLC Ranch emphasizes soil stewardship and biological diversity as part of caring for its trees.

03 / THE HARVEST

The work isn't finished when the pecans fall.

After harvest, moisture and handling matter. Proper drying and storage help protect pecan quality and reduce the conditions that allow mold to grow. TLC Ranch grows its pecans on the family property, then uses an off-site facility for cracking, shelling, and bagging the native halves.

01 / THE BEGINNING

They saw potential in the land.

In 1996, the Sheffield family came across a piece of Oklahoma land that others had passed over. They purchased it in 1997.

At first, the ranch was where the family spent weekends outdoors. Over time they cut trails, restored ponds, and kept returning to the work of caring for the property, even while holding jobs in Dallas–Fort Worth.

02 / THE YEARS

What began with native trees kept growing.

Native pecan trees were already growing on the ranch. The family later planted 400 more, and over the years that number grew to more than 2,000 trees across the property.

To Tread and Cindy, the land is a long-term family responsibility. Their approach to the orchard centers on organic growing, caring for the soil, and biological diversity.

MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PECANS

Tread & Cindy Sheffield

For Cindy, questions about food became deeply personal after her own difficult health experiences. She began paying much closer attention to what her family ate and where it came from.

Tread and Cindy have spent decades turning the property into a working family ranch, with their daughters and other family members involved today.

ROCK has now spent time getting to know them face to face. The pecans aren't anonymous to us. We know the family responsible for growing them.

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION

02 Are pesticides or chemical sprays used in the orchard?
PESTICIDES + SPRAYS

ROCK has confirmed that TLC Ranch does not use pesticides or conventional chemical sprays in its pecan orchard.

Tread has described organic-approved, soil-focused treatments, which are different from pesticide use.

03 What inputs and growing practices does TLC Ranch use?
SOIL + TREE CARE

Tread describes soil drenches, warm- and cool-season cover crops, hand weeding, garlic clips used to discourage deer, and strips of taller grass between rows. The family also experimented with grazing bison in the orchard during 2026.

Tiffany has mentioned fish emulsion, compost teas, and beneficial fungi among their soil-focused inputs. The complete list of product names and ingredients has not yet been supplied to ROCK, so these are examples, not an exhaustive inventory.

04 What are native pecan halves, and how much is in a bag?
NATIVE PECANS

Native pecans come from native-type pecan trees, rather than the improved grafted varieties TLC Ranch also grows. 'Halves' means the nuts have been removed from their shells and kept mainly in halves rather than chopped.

05 When are native pecans harvested, and how are they kept fresh?
HARVEST + FRESHNESS

Tread says the native pecans at TLC Ranch generally mature around mid-November, later than the ranch's improved varieties, which mature toward the end of October.

After shelling, TLC Ranch places its pecans into cold storage and pulls smaller quantities for shipping. This is the ranch's typical harvest schedule, not a harvest date for the specific bag you receive.

06 Where are these pecans grown, shelled, and packaged?
GROWN + PACKAGED

TLC Ranch says the pecans it sells are grown on the family's Oklahoma property. After harvest, the pecans are sent off-site to be cracked, shelled, and packaged.

07 How should I store these pecans?
KEEPING THEM FRESH

Pecans contain natural oils that can oxidize with exposure to heat, air, and light. Keep the bag tightly sealed in a cool, dry location. Refrigeration or freezing is the better choice for longer storage.

Tread says the pecans freeze and refreeze well.

08 How can I order TLC Ranch native pecans through ROCK?
ORDERING THROUGH ROCK

ROCK member families can view TLC Ranch native pecan halves when they are available in ROCK's private store. Log in to check current availability and the ordering options for your household.
